Indulgence

Indulgence , originally uploaded by babychic.

My favorite cake.

At least up to now.

Secret Recipe's Chocolate Indulgence.

Heavenly combination of chocolate cake layered with black and white chocolate mousse covered by another layer of chocolate sprinkled with some shredded coconut at the top.

Note: The picture is taken from the piece I just had this afternoon from the Secret Recipe outlet inside Pacific Place, Jakarta. And I must say the quality is no where near those I've consistently tasted in Malaysia. Their durian cake was much better.

My dinner last night

2 chocolate buns. Only cost me 13,000 Rupiahs or 4 Malaysian bucks.

chocolate inside out

chocobun

Actually I couldn't finish the second one. Too much chocolate for one day..

Tribute to their hero

Just found this: The same Filipino inmates who danced to "Thriller" have just composed a new dance in tribute to MJ.

They practiced 9 hours non-stop on Friday night into the wee hours of Saturday morning, only taking breaks to eat and when it rained. So that they can do this:

I'm so glad they chose this song. A very, very beautiful song that MJ co-wrote with Lionel Ritchie to raise aid money for the poor in Africa. Not to mention one of the best selling singles of all time. And how cute and inspirational that the Filipino inmates carried flags of different countries. Very befitting tribute to showcase the global reach of MJ's appeal.

He won the hearts of the world.

How cool is that?

Very cool apparently.

This clip of 1500 inmates in a Philippines prison dancing to "Thriller" has over 24 million hits.

There's so much said about MJ these couple of days, I feel there's no need for me to add anything more. I'm just listening to his songs, watching the 24 hours news coverage over CNN, ABC, tributes over Channel V, reading friends Facebook MJ comments, following MJ tweets, downloading MJ hit songs.. just immersing in this global cultural thing as it unfolds second by second.

The man's a paradox. He is. So powerfully talented and yet painfully vulnerable.

I've somewhat mixed feelings about him.

But ONE THING that I'm 100% certain is that He spawned a global cultural movement that transcends all boundaries. He did it while he was alive and he's doing it again after his death. And that is VERY COOL.

Nasi Padang @ Sari Ratu

Nasi Padang @ Sari Ratu, originally uploaded by babychic.

Sari Ratu is my ex-boss favorite Indonesian restaurant.

Every time I'm on business trip to Jakarta with him, we end up dining there.

They serve Padang cuisine.

The service lay a huge spread in small plates on your table and you choose what you want.

Like a buffet. Only the food gets to you instead of you going for it.

The gigantic prawns were very yummy at RM10+ a piece.

Though be careful to ask for details. That plate behind the giant prawn, 2 lumps on curry? My friend unwittingly ate it only to find out later to her horror that it's cow's brain. :)

Now the brother's in it too!

Please don't tell anyone this, but just found the brother's blog and what a weird name he's given it: Leave your turtle shell.

Hehehe!

Real life love story

I was on the bus waiting to be shuttled to LCCT last Sunday and had time to do one of my favorite past time - people gazing.

I saw this young couple, hand in hand coming down the escalators. They stopped in front of the bus, a peck on the forehead and both parted ways.

The boy came up to my bus. On the steps of the bus, he couldn't help turning back searching for the girl friend. "I'll miss you" clearly written on the face.

I was curious to see if she would turn back at the same time. It would be just like the movies then.

She didn't. Already on the escalators back up, the boy only caught her back.

He moved on.

Just when he's walking past my seat, the girl turned her head and it was her turn to search for the sight of her sweetheart. And again I can read the "I'll miss you" on her face.

But of course he didn't see her turning back, just as she missed his.

But I saw it.

And their genuine display of sweet affection made my day.

It was after all just like the movies.

Or shall I say: movies are just like real life!

Is there anything the man can't do??

The media is abuzz with Obama's fly swatting skills.

Single swat and he got the bugger? Impressive! And with such poise too.

He sure gets my vote if he joins the "so you think you can swat flies" competition.

Not even Hollywood could have come up with a better leading man.

I thought with Bush junior, America couldn't have done worse. And with Obama I think they couldn't have done any better.

What a world of difference.

So I think Alex Wong can dance his hat off

I'm hooked on So You Think You Can Dance, love talented dancers.

Guess most people had the same reaction that Mia Michaels(eyes popped open, jaw dropping, drooling)had when we all saw Alex Wong perform his solo for Vegas week (clip below)

And then he was cut due to his contract with the Miami City Ballet.

I think many audiences are as gutted about it as he was.

Nonetheless his appearance on SYTYCD Season 5 albeit brief has already exposed his name to the limelight, garnering him fans beyond those who'd seen him performed for the MCB.

He's actually won quite a number of international accolades as detailed on his profile page at The Winger.com.

Hope he returns and get into SYTYCD Season 6 top 20.

And meantime hope more clips like the one below surface on the net. The guy's not only a talented dancer, he's hilarious!

p/s: Alex is the guy on the left with the stuffed hip. As he wrote on his blog, this was taken while they had free time waiting to perform in MBC's Don Quixote (hence the custome).

I love taking pictures of kids.

But it could be hard to do so because I don't have my own kids. And Malaysian parents are sooooo protective of their kids, seldom would they allow any stranger to point a camera at their precious.

So the only times I get to shoot kids (ooh that sounds criminal), is with my own cousins, nephews and nieces.

But at the Filipino market in KK, I had a rollicking time shooting some of the most sporting kids I've met ever.

They love having me photograph them, and I love photographing them. So we all clicked and there goes a free and impromptu photography session!

p/s: They kept shouting "no belok belok" and I'd no clue what that means, so I just kept saying "yea no belok belok" back to them. To this day, I've no idea what "no belok belok" means..

Sabah - tiny but essential

hei bi, originally uploaded by babychic.

My malay colleagues were keen to buy these, dried shrimps or as we say it in hokkien "hei bi'.

According to my colleagues, the 'pros', the sabah dried shrimps are famous for making your food extra yummy if added.

I won't know but my vietnamese ex-roommate Van might since she's fond of using 'hei bi' to spice up her dishes. But then she brought her own hei bi all the way from Ho Chi Minh to Ipoh so I'm 100% sure she'll tell me vietnamese 'hei bi' beat Malaysian 'hei bi' hands down, 24/7, 365!

Sabah - fresh off the waters

The Filipino market at downtown KK is an awesome place to look for food.

Fronting the South China Sea, you get an exotic backdrop to boot for an exotic and delicious feast as well.

Some of these grilled fish sells for RM10 per ekor, real bang for the buck considering how fresh and finger licking good they are.

Sabah - ayam panggang

ayam panggang, originally uploaded by babychic.

I was in Sabah last year for a workshop on the Kyoto Protocol organized by PETRONAS.

Sabah is an awesome place, my 2nd favorite Malaysian state after Penang. The land is beautiful and the people there are so much livelier and fascinating than the mainland Malaysians. You also get a dash of adventure with potential encounters with pirates that roam the south china sea..

The workshop was at Le Meridien, Kota Kinabalu which is minutes away from the open air seafront Filipino market.

So I managed to walk around and snapped some pictures.

There were lots of food on sale in the market, raw, cooked, fried and yea grilled.

Aroma of bbq meat filled the market for sure.

Neroteca

I'm waiting for 2 latest episodes of SYTYCD season 5 to finish downloading.

Am not willing to pay for the expensive wifi offered by the hotel, so get connected I go down to Pacific Place where there are many restaurants offering free wifi (konon, am sure they'd priced it into their dishes).

I especially like this place called overrice because the food is cheap (around RM10 per meal but cheap in Pacific Place terms) and the internet is super high speed. I get download rates of >80kbps, double and almost triple the rate I get back in my Cheras apartment.

Because my weekend meals lasts so long (takes 2-3 hours for my downloads to be done), I've brought the notebook out today. Thinking I'd work on it while the series download on my netbook.

Hasn't happened.

Instead I've been surfing fun stuff, playing with facebook blabla and now blogging.

I was looking through my flickr page and realised there were quite a lot of stuff I wanted blog about but was too lazy back then.

Like the meal I had at Neroteca when Denise came to visit ages ago.

Neroteca is purportedly one of the best Italian restaurants in town. The other one being Nerovivo.

It's nestled inside the Somerset hotel, kinda secluded.

nero teca
I like the decor, it's like entering an Italian kedai runcit, very rustic yea?

And the service was quite good, friendly waitors/waitress, though they were quite shorthanded because the place was crowded.

Too bad the lighting was quite dark and hence no good pictures.

The only one I had is Denise's dish, the Pennette 'Maremonti' with porcini, prawns and codfish (RM32++).

Maremonti

I had their Rustica sandwich which was pretty damn good (RM18++). Can't remember what the sister had, one of their sandwiches too with eggplants and it was pretty darn good as well.

We had two desserts, their pannacotta (RM18++) and tiramisu (RM18++).

panna cotta

Denise and Hui Yin were pretty unimpressed with the presentation of the pannacotta. Hui Yin said it's no presentation at all, just a white slab on a plate with drippings of chocolate sauce! haha quite true but personally what's important for me as always is taste. Presentation is secondary, in fact if the thing is too pretty, I won't bear to dig into it! The pannacotta was not bad but the sis said Michelangelo's version is better.

tiramisu
The tiramisu looked much better, taste wise wasn't much to shout about though.

we us

Haven't done this for quite a long while, dining and posing with my friends.

Won't mind going back to Neroteca when I'm back in town, their sandwiches are fab.

I miss this..

The avocado ice cream coco de nata dessert at Pho Hoa, the Curve.
One of the best dessert I've ever had.
I want to have it the moment I set foot in KL.
